Was Uber Negligent in the Death of an Arizona Woman?

by JC @ Ridester.com

Many questions have come up in the wake of last Sunday’s tragic event when one of Uber’s autonomous Uber cars hit and killed a woman in Tempe, Arizona. Dash cam video from the accident reveals that the woman Uber hired to oversee the car and ensure that it was operating properly wasn’t paying attention at the time the accident occurred. The woman, Rafaela Vasquez, 44, of Arizona is seen in the video fixated on something that appeared to be in her lap.  She took her eyes off the road for long periods of time and only briefly glanced up every

How Much Does it Really Cost to Drive Your Car for Uber and Lyft?

by JC @ Ridester.com

Talk to any fellow Uber and Lyft drivers at the airport holding lot and someone is sure to bring up how little we’re all earning.  Then someone will open up the driver app and proudly show off that he earned $20 in an hour just a few days ago. But somehow it just doesn’t feel right.  If we’re all earning $17-$20 an hour, which is well above minimum wage, why do we feel so poor? There’s plenty of information on gross income numbers, our most popular article included, but not very much information on the hidden expenses of rideshare driving.

California lawmakers propose bills to beef up disaster insurance coverage

San Francisco Chronicle

State legislators have introduced a package of bills that would beef up or extend insurance coverage to policyholders following declared disasters, but only one would be retroactive and apply to victims of the recent wildfires. Critics say the bills could drive up insurance premiums and reduce competition in California. Under SB897, insurers would have to offer policyholders, following a declared state of emergency, a settlement equal to 80 percent of their contents coverage without requiring them to submit a detailed inventory. This provision would apply to claims filed July 1, 2017, or later by homeowners and renters.
