TD1 Forms for 2013 The basic personal exemption Federally for every resident of Canada is $11,038 for 2013 which means that you can earn this amount and not pay any Federal Income tax. However, the Ontario Provincial basic exemption is $9,574. New Employees must complete TD1 Forms When you start to work at a new employer the employer should get you to complete a TD1 Form which is required for both Federal and Ontario Provincial tax deductions. This form allows the employer to determine how much tax is required to be withheld from your pay. How to Reduce the Taxes Withheld at Source If your circumstances change and the amount of tax withheld should be less you should also complete a new TD Form. A few examples are as follows: If you are in school, are older then 65 years of age with income less then about $80,256, or have a disability or have a spouse whose income is less then $11,038 the you may be entitled to earn more tax free. If you typically get refunds you can get them Quicker – Pay less now You can also have the employer reduce taxes deducted if you are making periodic contributions to a RRSP or have child care or employment expense or pay deductible spousal support payments. To make the request to have less taxes withheld you need to complete Form T1213, typically this form needs to be completed annually, to get a letter from CRA and give the letter of authority to your employer. You do not need the letter of authority if your employer deducts the RRSP contributions from your salary.
