My husband died in June 2017. I applied for survivor benefits in July and received my first direct deposit of benefits into my checking account on 8/2 for June/July. I am supposed to receive benefits on the 4th Wednesday of every month. It is now 9/5 and I have yet to see a direct deposit for August. I haven't rec'd any notice in the mail of any changes. I am wondering if it is normal to have such a delay in deposit.

I'm sorry for your loss.
Apparently your husband's birthdate was after the 20th of the month, in which case your survivor benefit payment for August will be paid on the 4 Wednesday of September (i.e. 9/27). Your payment for September will then be paid on the 4th Wednesday in October, and so on.
The reason that you were paid your previous check on August 2nd is that the initial benefit payment can come at any time of the month if past benefits are due. In that event Social Security makes the first payment as soon as they can process the claim.

The website still says my claim is under review (quality control) since 11/2. Over a week ago, my lawyer called and said they spoke with.SSA, and my claim was approved. It was approved without any appeals in approx 60 days. Today would be my scheduled pay date and nothing was deposited. Will I have to wait until 12/27,.or could it post to my account earlier?

Your first payment could come at any time. When Social Security owes back pay for previous months, they don't wait until the regularly scheduled payment date to make their initial payment. You should also receive an award letter by mail that explains how your payment amount was calculated, but that could be received up to 2 weeks after you receive your first direct deposit.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt liked to point out that because American workers pay into Social Security with their payroll taxes, they could claim a “legal, moral and political right” to their benefits. “With those taxes in there, no damn politician can ever scrap my Social Security program,” Roosevelt said. So far, he’s been right. But the damn politicians keep trying. In 2005, President George W. Bush made a tremendous effort to privatize Social Security, but it was soundly rejected. It is no surprise that every 2016 Republican candidate — including Donald Trump — spoke of making cuts to the program. You would expect Democrats to embrace Social Security, one of their greatest success stories. But sometimes certain Democrats need a reminder of whose side they are supposed to be on. As recently as 2013, President Obama included cuts to Social Security in his proposed budget — in the form of “chained CPI,” a new cost-of-living measure that would have resulted in reduced benefits. America is facing a retirement crisis. According to the Center for Retirement Research, more than half of working households will not have enough income in retirement. Conservatives tend to deny the crisis exists at all, while mainstream commentators lay the blame on the individual. No retirement savings? They say it’s your fault for not investing more in your 401(k). No, it’s not your fault. The retirement crisis is the result of bad policies, not bad habits. First of all, it’s impossible to save enough for retirement when you’re not paid enough to get by even during your working life. Real (inflation-adjusted) wages have been falling or stagnating for the majority of workers since 1979, even though productivity has increased. Income inequality has reached crisis levels: 99 percent of new income goes to the top one percent of the population. It’s an insult to tell underpaid workers it’s their fault for not putting away 15 percent of their income for retirement. Second, workers have endured an ongoing attack against two important elements of retirement savings: Social Security and pensions. Hello
I recently applied for Social Security, I turn 62 or more to 25th, I was told that my first check will be for the month of April however my first payment would be in May. I was told that my payment will be a month behind, meaning in my opinion I will never see that payment due to the fact it will be paid after death. What I'm not understanding if my dad died in June 18, last year therefore he receives his may check in June, what happened to his June check which he was alive that month ? What do the Social Security department do with peoples math what do the Social Security department do with that check. Is there anywhere I can make a complaint of concern.? Thank you
Hi,
I'm not clear on your first sentence, but unless you were born on the 1st or 2nd of the month, if you reach age 62 in March then your earliest possible month of eligibility for Social Security retirement benefits would be April. You must be 62 for an entire month in order to qualify (https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0300201001). Social Security payments are normally paid in the month after the month for which they're due, so it sounds correct that your first payment would be scheduled for May.
Regarding payments for the month of death, a person must live throughout the entire month in order to be due a payment for that month. If a beneficiary dies on April 30th, for example, they would not be due the payment that would normally be paid for April in May, and such payments if made would need to be returned to the Social Security trust fund.
Both of the above provisions are in the Social Security laws passed by Congress, so your congressional representatives would be the proper place to register complaints.
By the way, you may want to strongly consider using the maximization software available of this website to see if you have better options with regard to claiming your Social Security benefits.

The Social Security Administration has announced that the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2017 will be 0.3 percent. The change will slightly increase monthly benefits for the nearly 66 million recipients of Social Security disability insurance (SSDI), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and Social Security retirement and survivor benefits. According to Social Security (pdf factsheet), the estimated average monthly Social Security benefit for a retired worker in January 2017 will be $1,360, a $5 increase from 2016. For disabled workers, the average monthly benefit will be $1,171, a $4 increase from 2016. The monthly maximum federal SSI amounts for 2017 are $735 for an eligible individual, $1,103 for an eligible individual with an eligible spouse, and $368 for an essential person. The maximum Social Security benefit for a worker retiring at full retirement age will be $2,687 per month in 2017. The combined tax rate for Social Security and Medicare will remain the same: 7.65 percent for employees and 15.3 percent for self-employed people. However, the maximum taxable earnings limit will increase from $118,500 to $127,200 annually. The thresholds for substantial gainful activity (SGA) for Social Security disability will increase to $1,170 per month for non-blind people and $1,950 per month [...]

If an individual chooses/applies to take SS retirement benefits in the month they reach FRA (i.e. as soon as possible with no reduction). Will the individual receive their "initial payment" in that month, or the following month? I understand SSA pays benefits in arrears, however, on the initial payment when reaching FRA there appears to be some conflicting information on the internet as to when it is paid. Thanks Larry.
Hi,
In the scenario you describe, the person's first payment would be due in the month following their month of full retirement age attainment. For example, if a person turns 66 in August and chooses that as their month of election to start benefits, their first payment would be due in September. However, sometimes a person's first payment can come earlier or later than normal depending on when they file their application for benefits.

I retired at 62, and collect social security. In April I will be 65 and on Medicare part a only. Husband works and on his insurance. Why are they not paying me my social security for march? I need that check for bills. Said I will get a check in April for 1 month, then monthly after that. So I will be out a check for 1 month. Thank you!
Hi,
Social Security benefits are paid in the month following the month that the payment is for. If March 2018 is your initial month of entitlement to Social Security benefits, then your first payment is due in April 2018. In other words, you are paid IN April FOR March. And so on.
On the other hand, if you've been receiving benefits for some time now and you aren't being paid in March for February, then I don't know what the issue may be. You'll probably need to check with Social Security in that event.

Most workers pay the 6.2 percent Social Security tax all year long, but the very rich get a tax break. Wage income above $118,500 annually is not subject to Social Security tax. This means that someone earning $1 million per year only paid into Social Security for the first 44 days of the year, through February 13. Starting on Valentine’s Day, these super-rich earners paid no Social Security tax, meaning they have a lower effective tax rate. Senator and Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has proposed scrapping the cap on taxable earnings. The Social Security system is currently in good financial health, with a $2.8 trillion surplus and the ability to pay every penny in benefits for the next 18 years. However, by removing the cap on taxable income, we can make Social Security solvent for the next 50 years, and expand benefits to help seniors and people with disabilities.

The Social Security Administration has announced that the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security retirement and disability benefits will be a 2.0 percent increase. Experts say the raise is not enough to keep up with the actual increase in the cost of living for seniors and people with disabilities. The average retired worker will receive an estimated $1,404 per month in January 2018, compared to $1,377 before the raise. The average disabled worker will receive $1,197 per month in January 2018, compared to $1,173 before the increase. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments will rise from $735 per month for an individual in 2017 to $750 per month in 2018. For an eligible couple, the SSI monthly benefit will increase from $1,103 in 2017 to $1,125 in 2018. The SSI resource limit will stay the same, at $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. The substantial gainful activity level, which marks the gross income amount at which a person is not considered disabled, will rise from $1,170 per month to $1,180. Jo Ann Jenkins, CEO of AARP, said that the increase does not reflect the fact that many costs, such as prescription drugs, utilities and housing, rise faster [...]

Sen. Patty Murray There are more than twice as many women 65 years old and older living in poverty as there are men in those circumstances. Social Security treats men and women the same, but benefits are based on earnings, and women earn less than men on average. This results in female retirees receiving an average of $13,500 annually in Social Security benefits, while men receive $17,600 on average. Women are also more likely than men to rely on Social Security for a large portion, or even all, of their income. Unmarried women are even more likely to rely primarily on Social Security for income in retirement. Democrats in Congress want to change Social Security to address this disparity, while remaining gender-neutral. Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) has introduced a bill that would increase benefits for unmarried, divorced and widowed Americans, as well as some children of retired, disabled or deceased workers. The Retirement and Income Security Enhancements (RAISE) Act would: Increase benefits for divorced spouses, permitting those who were married for between five and ten years to receive a phased-in percentage of benefits based on their spouse’s earnings. Hi,
By SSI, you're apparently referring to Social Security benefits and not Supplemental Security Income (SSI). All SSI payments are issued on the 1st day of the month, whereas Social Security payments may be issued on either the 3rd day of the month, or the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Wednesday of the month depending on the recipient's birthdate (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.01/handbook-0121.html).
Unless you receive both Social Security and SSI payments, it's very unlikely that you would meet any of the conditions that would allow you to change your Social Security payment date to the 3rd of the month.

There is no shortage of articles claiming that young people do not believe Social Security will be there to pay them benefits when they need it. It is worth taking a look at whether young people actually hold these views, where these views come from, and whether they are accurate. Polls often find that a majority of Americans are not confident in the future of Social Security, and that young people are the least confident. I'm sorry for your loss.
If you mean that you are receiving widow's benefits on your husband's record, then your payments will probably normally arrive on either the 2nd, 3rd or 4th Wednesday of each month depending on your husband's birth date. If he was born in the first 10 days of a month you would be paid on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. If he was born between the 11th & 20th of a month, you would be paid on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, and if he was born after the 20th of a month you would be paid on the 4th Wednesday.
Your payment date could be different, though, depending on when you started receiving benefits and whether or not you also receive benefits on your own Social Security record (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.01/handbook-0121.html).

President Trump has pledged not to cut Social Security benefits, but beneficiaries are already suffering due to cuts in the operating budget of the Social Security Administration (SSA). According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the core operating budget of the SSA has been reduced by 10 percent, adjusted for inflation, since 2010. These budget cuts affect beneficiaries, most dramatically in the long wait for disability hearings. In 2016, the number of people waiting for a hearing to determine their eligibility for Social Security disability insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits rose above 1 million, and the average wait time for a hearing increased from 360 days in 2011 to 540 days in 2016. The Office of the Inspector General of the SSA released a report last month that showed that the average wait time in local field offices increased from 19 minutes in fiscal year 2010 to 26 minutes in 2015. About 4.5 million people — more than 11 percent of visitors — waited one hour or more at a field office in 2015. That’s up from 2.3 million people waiting an hour or more in 2010. I agree with the person in the link below, as I have asked the same question as to why social security benefits are one month behind, and the government is stealing billions of dollars over the years from this scam.
I now have proof to support the scam... I began receiving SS benefits at end of Feb 2017 which was for the month of January 2017. I recently received a 1099 form in which the amount equates to receiving only 11 of the 12 payments due for 2017=RECEIVED FEB-DEC 2017, thus, I was not paid for one month.

I wouldn't describe it as a scam, but Social Security does pay benefits in the month following the month that the payment is for. Therefore, if your first payment was for the month of January 2017, you would only have received 11 payments in the calendar year of 2017. As a result your 1099 form, which is issued for tax purposes, only reflects 11 months of payment.
To answer your question, though, yes this anomaly normally only occurs in the first year of a person's entitlement. You should receive 12 payments in 2018, covering payments for the months of December 2017 though November 2018, and your 1099 for 2018 should reflect 12 months of benefit payments accordingly.

The Social Security Administration has adopted a streamlined process for waivers to fix errors in its treatment of people in same-sex marriages who are receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. The change was made after U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and 120 other Members of Congress sent a letter to Carolyn W. Colvin, the Acting Commissioner of Social Security, and Loretta Lynch, the Attorney General of the United States, alerting them to the error. A lawsuit was also filed by GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) on behalf of the beneficiaries. The letter from Members of Congress, sent in October 2015, noted that Social Security had continued to pay benefits to SSI recipients in same-sex marriages as if they were unmarried, which resulted in higher benefits than the married individuals were entitled to. Social Security then issued overpayment notices, though the individuals were not at fault. Social Security has now adopted a streamlined process for these individuals to avoid having to pay a penalty for the agency’s mistake. The new process assumes that each beneficiary has requested a waiver of recovery of the overpayment, and that the individual is without fault.

I can't find an official reference that answers your question, but as I recall Social Security's explanation at the time was that paying all benefits on the 3rd of the month created problems for the banking industry. So, spreading payments throughout the month was intended to ease the strain on banking resources. That's just based on my recollection, though, and there's probably more to the story.
