RE: Setting Up the DIRECT DEPOSIT PAYROLL Option

by BVROB @ Setting Up the DIRECT DEPOSIT PAYROLL Option

I have gone thru this process several times with BV clients. Your Bank's branch employees will not be much help.

You need to connect with the Technical IT people from your bank which may be at a seperate location. They have done this a million times with hundreds of software programs. They will understand what you are trying to do and give you the correct info.

Yes you will have to send them a test payroll file from BV so that they can give you the OK that it will work. But you have to find out first where to send it and what info is required in this file.

New account statement feature broken?

by Randy Volkart @ Sage BusinessVision Features - Recent Threads

In BV2018 there are some new options to print account statements:

Only include when:

    Current balance exceeds credit limit

    Balance is more than

    Aged balance is

These are checkbox options, and by default none of them are checked. I had 3 clients print their account statements this month, and each time with these default settings an email went out to every Customer account that had the email option set for account statements, and for the customers with a $0.00 balance they just got a broken blank account statement form with no data in it. Or at least this is true for the ones with unlimited credit limit, I just realised I didn't test any with a credit limit myself.

Regardless, it seemed that if we checked the 'Current balance exceeds' option, the account statements were sent out normally with only customer that had a balance receiving it. Problem is you don't want to rely on the user remembering to check that option every month, so we're probably going to see this happen more often.

I thought maybe I could just open the account statement .rpt file in the Report Designer and nuke those parameters, but I don't see them anywhere in the parameter list or record select option? The Balance option takes a number, so there should be a > comparison somewhere in there, but I don't see anything of the sort.

Adrian Lamo, ‘Homeless Hacker’ Who Turned in Chelsea Manning, Dead at 37

by BrianKrebs @ Krebs on Security

Adrian Lamo, the hacker probably best known for breaking into The New York Times's network and for reporting Chelsea Manning's theft of classified documents to the FBI, was found dead in a Kansas apartment on Wednesday. Lamo was widely reviled and criticized for turning in Manning, but that chapter of his life eclipsed the profile of a complex individual who taught me quite a bit about security over the years. Adrian Lamo, in 2006. Source: Wikipedia. I first met Lamo in 2001 when I was a correspondent for Newsbytes.com, a now-defunct tech publication that was owned by The Washington Post at the time. A mutual friend introduced us over AOL Instant Messenger, explaining that Lamo had worked out a simple method allowing him to waltz into the networks of some of the world's largest media companies using nothing more than a Web browser.

Thanks Donly. I realized after I posted that I can produce individual statements from the Customer ledger so it is workable but not ideal. But I also realized that the Aged Receivables report doesn't show the zero-balance accounts either so that's annoying.

15-Year-old Finds Flaw in Ledger Crypto Wallet

by BrianKrebs @ Krebs on Security

A 15-year-old security researcher has discovered a serious flaw in cryptocurrency hardware wallets made by Ledger, a French company whose popular products are designed to physically safeguard public and private keys used to receive or spend the user’s cryptocurrencies. Hardware wallets like those sold by Ledger are designed to protect the user's private keys from malicious software that might try to harvest those credentials from the user's computer.  The devices enable transactions via a connection to a USB port on the user's computer, but they don't reveal the private key to the PC. Yet Saleem Rashid, a 15-year-old security researcher from the United Kingdom, discovered a way to acquire the private keys from the Ledger devices. Rashid's method requires an attacker to have physical access to the device, and normally such attacks would fall under the #1 rule of security -- namely, if an attacker has physical access to your device it is not your device anymore.

Forum Post: RE: Negative committed quantities and Back order quantities.

by GUSB @ Sage BusinessVision

an excerpt from the help section, read the second point as it might shed light on your problem Bill of Material Overview It is important to understand the differences between manufactured and kitted items: Good examples of manufactured items are glue, pizzas, and CDs. You take various components and manufacture it into a brand new substance. A good example of a kitted item is a computer. It contains a hard disk, memory, computer case, power supply, motherboard, and so on. One way to look at the difference is that you can return a kitted item into its components, whereas you cannot return a manufactured item back into its ingredients. Another major difference between manufactured items and kitted items is how you bring the inventory in. The only way to bring manufactured items into inventory is to use the Receive Inventory feature in the Inventory module. Once you do so, the item functions in the same way as a normal item from the sales point of view. For kitted items, the system can assemble the items automatically in the Order Entry module as well. You cannot use alternate items when assembling kitted items.

The process of buying or selling a home can be extremely stressful and complex, but imagine the stress that would boil up if -- at settlement -- your money was wired to scammers in another country instead of to the settlement firm or escrow company. Here's the story about a phishing email that cost a couple their home and left them scrambling for months to recover hundreds of thousands in cash that went missing. It was late November 2016, and Jon and Dorthy Little were all set to close on a $200,000 home in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Just prior to the closing date on Dec. 2 their realtor sent an email to the Little's and to the law firm handling the closing, asking the settlement firm for instructions on wiring the money to an escrow account.

Look-Alike Domains and Visual Confusion

by BrianKrebs @ Krebs on Security

How good are you at telling the difference between domain names you know and trust and imposter or look-alike domains? The answer may depend on how familiar you are with the nuances of internationalized domain names (IDNs), as well as which browser or Web application you're using. For example, how does your browser interpret the following domain? I'll give you a hint: Despite appearances, it is most certainly not the actual domain for software firm CA Technologies (formerly Computer Associates Intl Inc.), which owns the original ca.com domain name: https://www.са.com/ Go ahead and click on the link above or cut-and-paste it into a browser address bar. If you're using Google Chrome, Apple's Safari, or some recent version of Microsoft's Internet Explorer or Edge browsers, you should notice that the address converts to "xn--80a7a.com." This is called "punycode," and it allows browsers to render domains with non-Latin alphabets like Cyrillic and Ukrainian. Below is what it looks like in Edge on Windows 10; Google Chrome renders it much the same way. Notice what's in the address bar (ignore the "fake site" and "Welcome to..." text, which was added as a courtesy by the person who registered this domain):

What Is Your Bank’s Security Banking On?

by BrianKrebs @ Krebs on Security

A large number of banks, credit unions and other financial institutions just pushed customers onto new e-banking platforms that asked them to reset their account passwords by entering a username plus some other static identifier -- such as the first six digits of their Social Security number, or a mix of partial SSN, date of birth or surname. Here's a closer look at what may be going on (spoiler: small, regional banks and credit unions have grown far too reliant on the whims of just a few major online banking platform providers). You might think it odd that any self-respecting financial institution would seek to authenticate customers via static data like partial SSN for passwords, and you'd be justified for thinking that, too. Nobody has any business using these static identifiers for authentication because it's all for sale on most Americans quite easily and cheaply in the cybercrime underground. The Equifax breach might have "refreshed" some of those data stores for identity thieves, but most U.S. adults have had their static details on sale for years now. On Feb. 16, KrebsOnSecurity reader Brent Hoeft shared a copy of an email he'd just received from his financial institution Associated Bank, which at $30+ billion in assets happens to be Wisconsin's largest by asset size.

RE: Setting Up the DIRECT DEPOSIT PAYROLL Option

by KPed @ Setting Up the DIRECT DEPOSIT PAYROLL Option

Direct Deposit is relatively easy to set up in BV.  To get the bank on board is a slightly more difficult issue.  We're with CIBC, and it takes 4 - 6 weeks to get their EFT dept. set up to accept our files.  I suggest you take this to your bank manager, and ask him how to set up direct deposit via EFT.

Once you have the bank set up, you'll be able to fill in the necessary info in BV.

You also need the employees bank info.  That's the Institution # (3 digits), transit # (5 digits) and then the account no.  All put in with no spaces.

If I can help further - give me a shout.

Forum Post: RE: QST---Is QST included in Inventory or asset costs?

by GUSB @ Sage BusinessVision

Here is some insight to your problem from this site: https://www.taxtips.ca/pst/outofprovincesellers.htm What tax does my business have to charge when shipping to another province? Generally speaking, a vendor should register to collect the PST of another province if they have a business presence (e.g. office, salespeople) in that province. If the vendor does not have a business presence in a province to which they are shipping, it is usually the responsibility of the buyer of the goods to remit the provincial sales tax. For more information on individual provinces, see below. f. HST Provinces Out-of-Province Vendors All vendors who are registered to collect GST are automatically registered to collect HST. A GST registrant in a non-HST province who sells goods which are delivered to an HST province must collect the HST. A registrant in an HST province who sells goods which are delivered to a non-HST province would collect only the GST, not the HST. For GST and HST rates see the GST and HST page. To charge the QST you must be registered. Hope this helps

Business Vision 2017 Email Errors

by Ken Hansen @ Sage BusinessVision Features - Recent Threads

We have a client that has upgraded from the 2001 BusinessVision to 2017.

I fixed their custom reports and validated the data for them they have been working fine.

For a few weeks, they were using the form and email setting for Customers (They used to use MAPI) and were liking the option to email the form.

Yesterday the emails started to send automatically - no more preview of the form This happened with Quotes as well.

For the Quotes, every quote that the Customer ever had was attached to the email.

For now, I have them set the options to Form only. When opened both open properly (both use the same form for email).

The export to pdf and application works properly (not seeing quotes from the beginning of time) .  Then the old method of sending the file from Adobe and pasting in the email address works.

As a precaution, I set up Outlook to prompt for allow or deny on sending.

Any suggestions on what may have changed or how to fix this?

Thanks

Survey: Americans Spent $1.4B on Credit Freeze Fees in Wake of Equifax Breach

by BrianKrebs @ Krebs on Security

Almost 20 percent of Americans froze their credit file with one or more of the big three credit bureaus in the wake of last year's data breach at Equifax, costing consumers an estimated $1.4 billion, according to a new study. The findings come as lawmakers in Congress are debating legislation that would make credit freezes free in every state. The figures, commissioned by small business loan provider Fundera and conducted by Wakefield Research, surveyed some 1,000 adults in the U.S. Respondents were asked to self-report how much they spent on the freezes; 32 percent said the freezes cost them $10 or less, but 38 percent said the total cost was $30 or more. The average cost to consumers who froze their credit after the Equifax breach was $23. A credit freeze blocks potential creditors from being able to view or "pull" your credit file, making it far more difficult for identity thieves to apply for new lines of credit in your name.

Achieve the Dream of a College Education with the Maryland 529 Save4College Program

College is expensive. I graduated with $35,000 in student loan debt. Some graduate with hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. I never had access to a 529 plan. I started college in 1998 and they were created in 1996 as Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code. Even if we knew about it, it […]

Checked Your Credit Since the Equifax Hack?

by BrianKrebs @ Krebs on Security

A recent consumer survey suggests that half of all Americans still haven't checked their credit report since the Equifax breach last year exposed the Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses and other personal information on nearly 150 million people. If you're in that fifty percent, please make an effort to remedy that soon. Credit reports from the three major bureaus -- Equifax, Experian and Trans Union -- can be obtained online for free at annualcreditreport.com -- the only Web site mandated by Congress to serve each American a free credit report every year.

San Diego Sues Experian Over ID Theft Service

The City of San Diego, Calif. is suing big three consumer credit bureau Experian, alleging that a data breach first reported by KrebsOnSecurity in 2013 affected more than a quarter-million people in San Diego but that Experian never alerted affected consumers as required under California law. The lawsuit, filed by San Diego city attorney Mara Elliott, concerns a data breach at an Experian subsidiary that lasted for nine months ending in 2013. As first reported here in October 2013, a Vietnamese man named Hieu Minh Ngo ran an identity theft service online and gained access to sensitive consumer data held by Experian's subsidiary by posing as a licensed private investigator.
